Abstract
Karachi is the world’s rapidly growing city, and it counts of the biggest cities in the world. The imbalance between public and private transport usage is increasing day by day in Karachi. To reduce this imbalance there is a need to shift private car users towards sustainable transportation approaches. To shift the people’s mode choice from private to public transport, there is the requirement of travel behavior survey. Therefore, this research is focused on the influencing of socio-economic factors on the mode choice of employees in Karachi city center. To collect the travel behavior information, a survey was conducted through a self-administrative quantitative questionnaire. Descriptive analysis tests were applied through SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) to analyze the data. The findings of the research were more towards the adoption of private transport. There is no such kind of positive impact of socio-economic factors towards the usage of public transportation. This study can help stakeholders with useful information for future planning and development of sustainable transportation approaches in Karachi. Research outcomes will support policymaking and provide a base for future study on the mode choice model for a sustainable alternative modal split.
